Because your knee is such an important part of your body, you’ll need to be sure you’re taking the right kind of care of your body both before and after surgery if you want to experience the best possible results. Do Your Exercises

The most crucial part of recovery is making sure your body heals and adapts in the way it’s supposed to. For knee surgery, that means being able to bend and walk without any pain or complication. After your initial surgery, a physical therapist will walk you through a course of approved exercises to do for a few weeks during your recovery. You’ll start slow and gradually work your way up to harder, more vigorous stretches. After being discharged from the hospital, it will be up to you to keep to this schedule and do all your necessary exercise each day without skipping.

Don’t Overdo It

That said, don’t get carried away. It can be very easy to get excited about your new knee and try to reach for the moon a few days out. However, this will not help you out in the long run. Always stick to the exercises that feel comfortable and don’t push yourself too hard. Eventually, you’ll be able to walk, train, or work out in the way that you’re used to. Until then, take it easy. The most important part of recovery from any surgery is rest. Let your body tell you what it needs, and don’t ever ignore signs of pain.

Listen to Your Physical Therapist

After your surgery, you will be assigned to a physical therapist who will decide the best course of treatment for you. This will include a list of approved exercises and stretches, along with a checklist of things to expect and milestones to reach during recovery. You’ll be asked to check in with your physical therapist each day and follow your prescribed routine in addition to taking painkillers. When it comes to actually recovering, listening to your physical therapist is just as important as resting up and taking your meds. Remember that your PT is a professional, and anything they decide is in your best interest.

Don’t Skip Out on Meds

Even though you might be feeling better than you expected after a few days of your surgery, don’t try to put yourself through more strain than you need to. It can feel exhilarating to come out of a surgery feeling invincible and in charge, but if you skimp on your pain medication, the pain will very quickly catch up to you. Listen to your doctor and follow through with the prescribed course of treatment no matter what.
